Student visit to Eli Lilly UK Ltd - May 2007
Former BPP student and joint winner of BIFM Student of the Year 2004, Alison Cousins, hosted a visit to her place of work in May 2007.
On arrival we experienced a fire evacuation, and took the opportunity whilst waiting in a safe area outside the premises to find out more about Lilly and the site. A new gatehouse complex and visitor parking were nearing completion.
Eli Lilly and Company Limited is the UK affiliate of major American pharmaceutical manufacturer, Eli Lilly and Company of Indianapolis. This affiliate is one of the UK´s top pharmaceutical companies, with a research and development centre, two manufacturing sites and a distribution centre which exports medicines to all parts of the world. www.lilly.co.uk/Nitro/index.jsp
Erl Wood is the research centre of Lilly UK and is located in woodlands near Windlesham, Surrey. It is a world-wide pharmaceutical business. The site comprises several modern and new buildings, and an old country mansion, set in fabulous grounds.
After a short talk by our Eli Lilly client host, Alison and her line manager, Peter Henderson, both working for FM contractor Amec, gave us a presentation on how the FM services and the FM contract is managed. Alison was bursting with enthusiasm on the changes and opportunities to add value to the client's business by improving the support. One example was ensuring that the FM laboratory staff were experienced in clinical conditions and able to relate to their customers in the Bioscience or Chemistry labs.
Alison escorted the group around the site, showing us innovations, changes and plans for new developments. Her hi-vis jacket had been labelled "princess" as a symbol of the impact on her new colleagues and client!
The visit concluded with a few tips on examination technique from Alison. Little did we know that the Part 1 Module 3 case study paper was set in a BioScience organisation. Let's the inspiration gained on the visit helped those students who attended the visit who sat this paper just a week later!
